You may have heard of these so called “superfoods” before, but what does the term really mean? While there is no true definition of the word, most nutritionists, doctors and scientists agree that a superfood is any nutrient dense food full of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals. By incorporating as many superfoods as you can into your daily diet, you may put yourself at a lower risk of severe health problems such as various forms of cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Those who eat superfoods on a regular basis tend to be overall more healthy and thinner than those who don’t.
- Tomatoes
Tomatoes contain an antioxidant known as lycopene. Lycopene is rarely found in other foods, and studies have shown that it can help protect your skin from harmful UV rays, prevent certain types of cancer as well as even lower cholesterol. In addition, tomatoes also contain high amounts of fiber, Vitamin C and potassium, all important components of a healthy diet. - Blueberries
Blueberries are full of something called “phytonutrients”. These phytonutrients neutralize agents that can cause premature aging and cell damage. The fruit also contains high levels of antioxidants shown to reduce effects of Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and protect the body against several forms of cancer. - Black beans
Black beans contain high levels of protein, 15g in just one cup. The best part? They do this without all of the icky saturated fats that other protein sources like meat contain. Black beans also contain high levels of iron, antioxidants and fiber. - Broccoli
Broccoli is another superfood that has high levels of phytonutrients. The phytonutrients found in broccoli may suppress tumor growth and reduce the risk of different types of cancer. Plus, a whole day’s worth of Vitamin C can be obtained in just one cup of this superfood, as well as a good amount of folic acid. - Quinoa
Quinoa is incredibly high in both protein and fiber, both of which help you to feel fuller longer. Just a half cup of quinoa has 14g of protein and 6g of fiber. Even though it’s classified as a grain, quinoa is naturally gluten free, making it a healthy substitute for anyone with a gluten intolerance or allergy. This superfood is also high in iron and potassium. - Spinach
Spinach is jam packed with antioxidants, vitamins and anti-inflammatory properties. The vitamins found in Spinach have been shown to promote better vision and stronger bones. One cup of spinach provides 12 percent of the daily recommended amount of calcium. - Almonds
Almonds are the most nutritionally dense nut in the whole world. Just one serving of almonds (roughly an ounce) provides almost 4g of fiber. In addition to fiber, they are also full of potassium, calcium, Vitamin E, magnesium and iron. - Green Tea
Green tea has long been used as a natural remedy for many different health concerns like heart disease as well as to promote weight loss. This superfood also contains a phytochemical known as EGCG, which has been shown to slow irregular cell growth, thereby warding off various types of cancers.
